From school to service: Jack’s story

30 May 2025

It had been Jack’s* childhood dream to one day join the Australian Defence Force. Now, following acceptance into the Force, he has realised that dream and he attributes it to the support of Youth Off The Streets.

Jack’s journey has been one of resilience, transformation and unwavering determination. From a young age, he faced significant challenges – struggling academically and navigating the aftermath of a traumatic childhood. But everything began to change when he connected with the First Nations Services team at Youth Off The Streets when he was 13. He found not only guidance but also a community that believed in his potential.

“Youth Off The Streets’ First Nations Services gave me the opportunity to attend training days,” he says. “Every time I felt like giving up, they motivated me to keep chasing my dream.”

At Youth Off The Streets, our dedicated First Nations Services team works to ensure the rights and needs of children and young people are reflected in all our services and programs. This includes individual cultural mapping assessments, family-inclusive case management and cultural casework support to design a cultural plan that strengthens the young person’s cultural identity.

Jack’s involvement with First Nations Services began with cultural expression – performing Aboriginal dances across Australia. These experiences became a turning point, helping him build confidence and pride in his identity. It was through this cultural connection that Jack began to see a positive future.

Jack’s story is a powerful testament to the impact of culturally responsive support and the strength of community.

“It’s been quite a journey. I can honestly say I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for the support from First Nation Services,” says Jack. “Now I’m going to be the first one in my family to finish Year 12 and I couldn’t be prouder.”
